The Reason We Play Board Games

So, why do I ALWAYS talk about board games? Why do I find them necessary and what is so great about them?

Well, I would be happy to share that with you. Growing up, I always played board games. I have memories of hours and hours of playing Monopoly at home and how special it was to me. This one memory in particular sticks out where I wanted to play so badly that while my Mom was blow drying my hair, I insisted on continuing to play the game with my Dad!

When playing games, children learn many new skills. They grow with their decision-making, how to strategize, they practice language, patience, math skills, sometimes matching…the list goes on.

Do I think every board game is awesome? No. I am in fact particular with the brands I like and what they teach.

At this point, we are really enjoying the cooperative games. What does this mean? It means that that the players work together to win the game. You either all win together, or you all lose. I think at age 3, it can be really hard to practice losing, so we are tackling one skill at a time at our house!

Every once in a while I will sprinkle in a non-cooperative game though :)
